Council Roundup: Briefing on I-405

Also, process approved to fill council vacancy

On Monday evening during an extended study session, the City Council was presented with an update by Washington State Department of Transportation staff on Interstate 405 express toll lanes and upcoming improvements. According to the agency, the new lanes have improved reliability and reduced travel times along the busy corridor.

Since launching the new system, WSDOT has made a number of modifications to improve performance including better signage, extending access points and adjusting the toll algorithms. Staff also walked the council through the Renton to Bellevue widening project which is currently in design. Construction is estimated to begin in 2019 with a target opening date of sometime in 2024.

After the presentation, councilmembers asked several questions about related projects and urged WSDOT, as per their past policy statement, to continue reinvesting toll revenue into I-405.

Council vacancy process underway
Earlier in the meeting, councilmembers unanimously agreed on the process to fill the position 5 seat vacated earlier this month by Vandana Slatter after her appointment to the state House of Representatives. Those interested have until 5 p.m., Feb. 2 to submit a letter of interest. To be eligible to serve on the council, applicants must be a Bellevue resident for one year and a registered voter.

Review of applications will take place on Feb. 6 in an executive session, and the council is expected to make the appointment by the end of February. Per the Revised Code of Washington, the city has until April 14 to fill the vacated seat.

More information on the process and how to apply can be found in an earlier news release.

Note: Due to Jan. 30 falling on the fifth Monday of the month, no council meeting will be held next week.
