Support for mosque celebrated in It's Your City

Residents made the words "Our diversity is our strength" the day after an arson fire at the Islamic Center of Eastside in January. The day after the Jan. 14 blaze, set by a homeless man who had received help from the Bellevue mosque, more than 500 people packed Sammamish High School's auditorium to show support for local Muslims.

That story occupies the front page of this month's issue of It's Your City, which is landing on Bellevue doorsteps this week. An update on the effort to site a permanent men's shelter in Bellevue, a council priority, is also on the front page. Also covered in the 12-page issue include:

  • Author Robin DiAngelo's well-attended presentation about combatting racism in the post-Civil Rights era;
  • Some of the outstanding, local arts groups that received funding from the city;
  • Approval of a 2017-2018 operating budget that addresses council priorities, including economic development, "smart cities" technologies and early implementation of the Grand Connection.

In addition, Deputy Mayor John Chelminiak wrote a Council Corner column about how both the Neighborhood Safety, Connectivity and Congestion levy and the Fire Facilities levy will be used to make our neighborhoods better and safer.
