After a year-long study and outreach process, staff told the City Council Monday that the draft Affordable Housing Strategy Report is almost done. The report, guided by the project's technical advisory group, focuses on actions that address the growing community need for affordable housing.
In an upcoming meeting this spring, councilmembers will receive the final report and recommendation as they consider which actions to use in implementing the strategy.
The draft materials that will form the basis for the report are available for the public to view, and consist of five interrelated strategies with a set of actions for each. These include:
- Helping people stay in their affordable housing;
- Creating a variety of housing choices;
- Creating more affordable housing;
- Unlocking housing supply by making it easier to build; and
- Prioritizing state, county and local funding.
Based on a recent analysis, these strategies have the potential to produce or preserve up to approximately 4,200 units of affordable housing over the next 10 years.
Staff is concluding the outreach process with an online open house. The web-based forum offers residents a way to learn more and give feedback on the draft strategy. The open house will remain open through Tuesday, April 4.
In 2016, the council prioritized creating an action-focused Affordable Housing Strategy for addressing the affordable housing need.
