City to host forum on cross-cultural communications

Explore cross-cultural communication through a forum the City of Bellevue is hosting at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26 at City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE. The program will feature Marcia McReynolds, co-manager of the city's mediation program, and Spring Cheng, principal of Resonance Path, who will share their personal stories of growing up in Eastern and Western cultures. The pair will then lead attendees through an interactive discussion with opportunities to practice communicating using different cultural norms.

"By exploring cultural norms, we can adjust our communication style to better connect with those from other cultures," said McReynolds. "The ability to listen for underlying meaning and practice different responses can also make our interactions more satisfying."

McReynolds and Cheng will explore the contrast between two paradigms of culture sometimes referred to as the "I" and "We" cultures. Participants will then learn of ways to adapt their communication based on who they're interacting with.

The forum is open to all members of the public. Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP via neighborhoodoutreach@bellevuewa.gov or 425-452-6836.

Exploring cross-cultural communication is part of a three-part "Better Together" series sponsored by the city and the King County Library System. The last event in the series is called "Under Our Skin: What Do We Mean When We Talk About Race" and will take place on Wednesday, May 31.
