Environmental Stewardship for Teens

Senior Culminating Project Volunteer
For local high school students, perform various tasks/projects for the city’s Natural Resource Division to complete a senior culminating project. A strong interest in wildlife, native plants, ecology, natural resource management and environmental education is desired from potential candidates. Scout Leadership Service Project
Scouts will run and organize a Stewardship Saturday or Eco Friday event for the city. Depending on the time of year they can take part in any number of natural resource opportunities, including: planting trees and shrubs, restoring trails, removing invasive plants, building fences and monitoring restoration sites. Scouts will work to recruit volunteers. Groups are invited to suggest projects. For more information, call Alexandra DySard at 425-452-4195.

Lake Washington Watershed Internship
This year-long (October to September) internship through the Pacific Science Center teaches teens (14 yrs and older) to become informed stewards of their community. Interns engage in hands-on environmental science, restoration projects, field trips and monthly stream monitoring. Recruitment takes place in September. Weekly meetings begin in mid-October. Naturalist in Training
Assist with two-week summer camps at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center. Ideal for high-school students (14 years and older) interested in working with kids in a nature-type setting. This program helps teens attain invaluable skills while meeting school service learning hour requirements. Accepted teens will attend two required Saturday trainings in May. Our camp programs run 10 weeks in the summer, from the last week of June through the end of August. The application process for this popular program ends the first week of April and training begins in May. Please call 425-450-0207 or email MercerSlough_teens@pacsci.org.

Stewardship Saturdays
Stewardship Saturdays are community volunteer events held one Saturday each month at park locations around the city. These events provide citizens the opportunity to participate in the stewardship and care of our City’s park resources and including invasive species mitigation and planting projects. Groups are welcome and invited. Children, supervised by their parents are welcome as well. Call: 425-452-4195.

Bellevue Botanical Garden
Remove invasive plants from the Garden's display gardens. Call Lisa Scott at 425-452-6826.

Park Enhancement
Become a parks steward, docent or naturalist, host visitors centers, plant trees throughout the city and more. Call 425-452-4195. If you are interested in helping out as a Canoe Guide to provide canoe tours of the Mercer Slough Nature Park, contact Laura Hughes at 425-452-7225.

Waterwise Garden
Learn how to plan and care for your yard and garden in a way that can greatly impact the health of our families and the environment. Volunteer days are the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1-3 pm from Spring to Fall at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. No experience is necessary. Stream Team
Monitor local streams for salmon, re-vegetate stream corridors with native trees and shrubs, help collect stream bugs for water quality monitoring, or work on a variety of other projects that help protect water quality and enhance stream habitat. Training sessions are provided. Contact: Laurie Devereaux, 425-452-5200.

Well KEPT
Renovate and maintain parks, with projects that may include forest enhancement, wetland restoration and trail construction. The Well KEPT Program is a summer youth employment program offered through the Natural Resource Division of the Parks & Community Services Department. The program is designed to provide Bellevue youth with education, job skills, and career development training in the field of park resource management. The Well KEPT Program combines on-the-job work experience, environmental education, and career development training to instill strong self-esteem, good work habits, and sound environmental ethics.
